Free sample · Day 1 · Whose Are You?

Made on Purpose

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.Genesis 1:27 (NIV)

Heart to Heart

Picture a woman who wakes up already behind. Before her feet hit the floor she is running the list: the emails she did not answer, the pounds she did not lose, the patience she did not have with the people she loves. By the time she pours her coffee, she has quietly graded herself. The grade is not good.

Maybe that woman is you. Most of us live as if our worth is a paycheck we have to earn every single day. Do enough, look good enough, hold it together well enough, and maybe we will be worth something by bedtime.

Genesis 1 tells a different story. Read the chapter slowly and you will notice a rhythm. God speaks, and light appears. God speaks, and seas and stars and birds and animals fill the world. Over and over He looks at what He made and calls it good.

Then something shifts. When God comes to humanity, He does not simply speak. He pauses, as if leaning in. "Let us make mankind in our image" (Genesis 1:26). And then verse 27 says it three times, like a drumbeat: created, created, created. Male and female. In His image.

In the ancient world, kings set up images of themselves across their territory to show who ruled there. The image meant, "This belongs to me." God did something no king would ever do. He did not carve His image in stone. He placed it in people. In women. In you.

That means your worth did not start with your résumé, your waistline, or your relationship status. It started with God's decision. You were not an accident, a leftover, or an afterthought. Before you ever achieved anything, you carried the fingerprints of your Maker.

Notice also that the woman is not a lesser copy. "Male and female he created them." Both bear His image fully. In a world that has often treated women as property or as less than, the very first chapter of the Bible says otherwise.

Now, sin has scratched and smudged that image in all of us. We will get to that. But a damaged masterpiece is still a masterpiece, and the Artist has not given up on His work. That is the whole reason Jesus came.

Here is the hard question: whose voice gets to decide your value? If it is your own inner critic, you will never be enough. If it is the culture, the target will keep moving. But if it is the God who made you, the verdict was settled before you took your first breath.

You are made on purpose. Your worth was given, not earned.

Dig Into the Word

  1. Read Genesis 1:26-31. What is different about the way God creates humanity compared to everything else, and what does He say about it all in verse 31?
  2. Read Psalm 8:3-5. How does David respond when he compares the size of creation to the value God places on people?
  3. Read James 3:9-10. Why does James say it is wrong to curse people, and what does that suggest about how we should speak about ourselves?

Honest Questions

  1. When you wake up in the morning, what is the first thing you tend to grade yourself on?
  2. Where did you first learn that your worth had to be earned? Who or what taught you that?
  3. If you truly believed you carry God's image, what is one thing you would stop saying about yourself?
  4. How does the truth that women bear God's image fully speak to places where you have felt less than?

Lie vs. Truth

The Lie: I only matter when I am producing, performing, or pleasing someone.

The Truth: My worth began with God's decision to make me in His image, and nothing I do can add to it or erase it (Genesis 1:27).

Speak Life

Say it out loud:

I am made in the image of God, on purpose and with purpose, and my worth was settled by my Maker before I ever did a thing.

Step Into It

Write Genesis 1:27 on a sticky note and put it on the mirror you use most. Each time you catch yourself grading your appearance or performance today, read it out loud.

I will:

Pray

Father, You made me on purpose. I confess that I have tried to earn what You already gave me, and I am tired. I have let other voices decide my value, and they have never been satisfied. Today I choose to believe that I carry Your image. Where that image has been smudged by sin and hurt, restore it through Jesus. Teach me to see myself the way You see me, and to treat the women around me as Your image bearers too. In Jesus' name, amen.
